So I know that I should have been posting sooner, but I had a couple of internet snags at the hotel.
I’ve been in Houston for three? days now. I think. I just finished unpacking all my stuff into my dorm room at the University of Houston. The bouch is interesting. So far I really like Houston, although, for the most part, I’ve been sitting in the ballroom of the Crowne Plaza. The thing that surprised me the most about the city is how BIG it is. And how there are hardly any people walking around during the day. I guess there is this system of tunnels underneath downtown so you don’t have to go outside in the heat.
Last night, we took a grand tour of all the different neighborhoods in the city, courtesy of our lost bus driver. Some places are really nice, and others aren’t. Which just reminds me why I’m here.
I found out that, in all likelihood, I’ll be teaching 7th grade (either writing or reading) at Patrick Henry Middle School next year. I think I’m being placed with 8 other ’07 corps members, which is exciting and scary at the same time.
The people here are great, both from TFA and from Houston. It is hot, but I think I can adapt. The other regions corps will be getting to Houston soon, so i’m just trying to stay out of the way. I met my institute roommate briefly. I think she said she went to U Penn, but I’m not sure.
I go to my summer school site tomorrow morning to set up our classroom and determine our goals. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Until then — much love to all.
